About the Item

Set of 19th century Meiji Era ornate etched bronze kagami hand mirrors, Japan By: unknown Material: bronze, copper, tin, metal Technique: cast, molded, patinated, polished, metalwork, etched Dimensions: 0.5 in x 7 in x 11 in Date: 19th century Style: Meiji Place of origin: Japan Crafted in solid etched bronze during Japan’s Meiji period, this pair of kagami hand mirrors reflects both refined craftsmanship and symbolic cultural meaning. Traditionally used not only as grooming tools but also in Shinto rituals and household altars, kagami were believed to embody purity and truth. The circular form—associated with the sun goddess Amaterasu—features intricate detailing on the reverse: one displays cranes amid foliage, an emblem of longevity and peace, while the other is adorned with stylized cherry blossoms and flowing water motifs, framing a central character. Subtle patination enhances the sculptural relief, revealing variations in tone from deep umber to muted gold. The handles, cast as solid extensions of the mirror, reinforce the sense of balance and integrity in form. Together, they offer a tangible encounter with Meiji-era aesthetics, where utility, spirituality, and design converge. As can be seen in the pictures, both mirrors should be polished since they wear a patina due to use and the passing of time.
