About the Item
A refined Japanese cloisonné enamel tray of elegant oval form, measuring 12 inches wide by 9 inches high, signed on the reverse by Gonda. The composition is set against a luminous turquoise blue ground, animated by a gently flowing scene of red and white goldfish swimming beneath delicately rendered morning glory vines in bloom.
The goldfish are executed with exceptional subtlety, their scales and fins finely shaded to suggest movement and depth, while the blossoms above display soft gradations of pink and white with restrained botanical precision. The contrast between the cool ground and the warm tones of the fish creates a balanced and visually engaging surface, characteristic of high quality late Meiji to Taishō period cloisonné aesthetics.
The copper rim is neatly finished and frames the enamel surface with understated elegance. Signed examples by Gonda are sought after for their technical refinement and painterly approach to enamel work, bridging traditional Japanese decorative motifs with a modern sense of composition and negative space.
A sophisticated and collectible work, equally suited for scholarly reference or as a display piece within a serious collection of Japanese enamel.
