Qianlong period Canton Enamel Square Dish with Dragon, China Late 18th Century
Located in Grythyttan, SE
This small and exquisite Chinese Canton Qianlong period enamel square dish features cut corners and is beautifully decorated with a five-clawed pink dragon surrounded by 18 blue ruyi clouds against a vibrant yellow background. The design is accented by two branches of peaches (or similar fruit) and two branches of peach blossoms (or other fruit blossoms), all framed by an intricate seaweed pattern border. In Chinese symbolism, five-clawed dragons are reserved exclusively for emperors, as the number five is considered sacred, representing the five elements. In contrast, four-clawed dragons are associated with kings, princes, and high-ranking officials, while three-clawed dragons are designated for the merchant class. This piece is crafted from enamel on brass, dating back to the Qianlong period (1736–1795), and is characterized by its hexagonal form and the distinctive Famille Rose palette, often referred to as "Canton enamel." Chinese painted enamel, commonly known as Canton enamel, derives its name from its principal manufacturing location, Canton. This technique was introduced to China in the 18th century, likely by French missionaries, and is inspired by the enameling techniques developed in Limoges, France around 1470. It is referred to in China as "foreign porcelain," suitable since much of it was made for export. During the 18th and 19th centuries, there was significant demand in the West for Chinese porcelain dinner sets...

Chinese Bronze Scholar Vase with Taotie, Ming/Qing Dynasty, 17th century, China
Located in Austin, TX
A small and interesting cast bronze archaistic scholar vase with loose ring handles and taotie mask design, late Ming or early Qing Dynasty, mid 17th century, China. The small vase of archaistic hu form, and cast with archaistic designs. Sitting on a tall splayed ring foot, the round body is cast with a large band featuring a ferocious taotie (ogre) mask. The taotie mask in this case id decidedly feline, with a ruyi shaped snout above a whiskered mouth. Two flanges stick out to either side of the mask, reminiscent of ears. A wide, tall neck rises from the body, terminating in a slightly everted mouth. The archaistic cast design on the neck is not as clear, but most likely represents Fusang, a mythical island in the Eastern Sea where the legendary Fusang tree grows. A Pair of Chinese Cloisonne Turquoise Blue Ground Vases w/ Taotie Masks
Located in New York, NY
A pair of Chinese cloisonné enamel vases with turquoise blue ground and taotie mask decoration, early 20th century. The vases are constructed in baluster form with wide flared rims and feature characteristic cloisonné work with multicolored enamels set within gilt copper wires. The decoration is applied over a bronze body, visible at the rims and foot rings, consistent with cloisonné. Each vase is decorated in horizontal registers centered around bands of large taotie masks in multicolored enamel, rendered in symmetrical profiles and outlined in copper cloisons. These taotie motifs alternate in color, including deep red, cobalt blue, olive green, and purple tones. The central band is bordered by narrower friezes of ruyi-heads, leiwen (thunder) patterns, stylized floral elements, and eye motifs framed by archaistic triangular lappets. Around the shoulders, a chevron band of lanceolate leaf motifs with white floral emblems is set above additional stylized animal mask motifs featuring eyes and horns. The flared necks are further decorated with mirrored scrollwork and smaller taotie devices on a turquoise leiwen ground, terminating in a ruyi band along the interior and exterior of the rim. These vases are representative of late Qing cloisonné production, which emphasized large-format vessels with elaborate archaistic ornamentation inspired by Shang and Zhou bronze...
