About the Item

A fine rare Meiji period 'Kabutomushi' bronze vase, exhibiting a fine old surface with an exceptionally fine patina overall, featuring an applied, naturalistically cast detailed figure of a Rhinoceros beetle. 'Kabutomushi' is the Japanese term for the Rhinoceros Beetle, 'kabuto' meaning helmet (in reference to a Samurai helmet) and 'mushi' meaning insect. In Japanese culture the Rhinoceros beetle is held in high regard for its symbolic reference to strength, power perseverance. Signed on the underside in Kanji, which are Chinese characters adapted to writings in Japanese. Of significant weight for a vase of this scale, weighing 2 lbs / 7 ounces.
