About the Item
An Extremely Rare Pair of Chinese Kangxi Period Cloisonné Planters with Landscape Scene. These vessels are formed in deep bowl shapes with recessed, gilt-lined rims and short, slightly waisted footrings. Their surfaces are entirely decorated using the cloisonné technique, in which compartments formed by thin metal wires are filled with colored enamel pastes and fired, then polished to achieve a smooth finish.
Each planter features a series of circular landscape medallions rendered in polychrome enamel on a turquoise ground. The landscapes depict mountainous terrain, rivers, bridges, and traditional Chinese architecture, including pavilions and tiered pagodas. The scenes are framed by lotus blossom reserves, interspersed with scrolling foliage. A continuous frieze of stylized ruyi-head motifs runs along the upper rim, while the foot is encircled by a geometric band of red and white star forms set in hexagonal reserves against a blue ground. The background areas are filled with dense floral scrollwork in red and green enamels over turquoise.
The cloisonné technique used in these planters reflects the advancements in enamel production during the Kangxi Period, particularly under the Xuande reign (1426–1435), when cloisonné enameling reached a high degree of refinement. The use of turquoise as a ground color, combined with the detailed landscape imagery, suggests these were produced by a workshop with access to high-quality materials and experienced artisans. Cloisonné of this type was often reserved for use within imperial or elite domestic settings, reflecting the technical complexity and decorative richness of the Kangxi Period.
Each planter is encircled with six large cartouche panels, each bordered by fine gilt wirework and set against a turquoise ground densely filled with scrolling foliage. These cartouches are circular in form and evenly spaced, separated by vertical bands decorated with multicolored lotus blossoms in symmetrical floral arrangements. The enamel within each cartouche depicts a distinct mountainous landscape scene rendered in vivid cobalt, aubergine, yellow, white, and green enamels, with black and gilt outlining used to define architectural elements, vegetation, and rock formations.
The scenes feature dramatic mountain ranges capped with white enamel to suggest snow, tiered pavilions and temples nestled within valleys, and traditional Chinese dwellings with green or blue tiled roofs. Rivers and lakes are shown winding through the terrain, with stylized waves rendered in layered blue and white enamel. Several panels show stone bridges arching across water, with willow trees and pine trees nearby, their branches picked out in finely detailed wirework. In some cartouches, birds are visible in flight above the landscape, while others include figures crossing bridges or standing near buildings, suggesting activity within these imagined rural settings.
The treatment of space within each panel is carefully layered, with overlapping ridges and cliffs creating depth and separating foreground dwellings from distant peaks. The rooftops, tree canopies, and bodies of water are articulated using a dense palette of opaque enamels that maintain vibrant contrast against the turquoise background. These narrative landscape scenes are consistent with Kangxi decorative traditions, which often drew from classical Chinese painting compositions to render idealized nature and architecture within framed decorative fields.
