About the Item

A fun and elegant vintage Japanese Art Deco hammered and brushed silver sake set, comprised of a tokkuri bottle and two stemmed cups, all marked "jungin" for 95% silver, Showa Era, circa 1930's, The tokkuri bottle of somewhat standard shape, with a tapered form and slightly concave base, a tall, narrow neck, and slightly everted mouth. The neck wrapped with bronze wire, indicating this set was made for hot sake. The body of the bottle decorated with a series of spiral whorls, known as uzumaki, a pattern used in Japanese decoration since neolithic times, with ambiguous meaning. Like many intricate geometric motifs, it could be related to deflection of evil and malicious intent and energies. The two sake cups bear the same decoration. The interiors gilt washed, and the stems also bearing the wrapped bronze wire. A fine and elegant way to serve and enjoy hot sake. Total weight 167.7 grams
