About the Item
A large and impressive vintage Nepalese parcel gilt copper repoussé "Makara" tripod incense burner, mid 20th century, circa 1950's, Nepal.
The fantastic and dramatic large tripod censer of typical form, with a generous globular body comprised of bands of parcel gilt and pierced repoussé copper exuberantly decorated with writhing dragons, fierce Kirtimukha (Face of Glory), the Ashtamangala (8 Auspicious Symbols), and dense floral scrolls. The censer is set on tripod feet shaped like makara heads, with two large everted handles, also shaped as makara. The wide neck similarly decorated with dragons and symbols from the Ashtamangala. A full bodied makara serves as the finial to the pierced repoussé cover, which also features sinuous dragons and symbols for the Ashtamangala.
Makara are protective chimeric beings, often associated with water. The makaras that form the the handles feature long, curved, elephantine trunks emerging from dragon like heads, long spouts of vegetal matter erupting from their mouths. The makara that form the feet of similar design, but with spouts of water forming the legs.
The noble makara that tops the censer is gorgeously cast, with a sinuous and sensuous feline body, wings of an eagle, the head of a dragon, horns of a stag, mane and front paws of lion, and back feet and trunk of an elephant. Its tail formed as an elegant bunch of scrolling foliage.
Kirtimukha, or the Face of Glory, is an especially well loved figure in Nepal. The smiling monster mask without a lower jaw is a protective figure, often appearing above doorways, ready to consume any spiritual or physical evil that crosses the threshold.
The Ashtamangala are the Eight Auspicious Objects, comprised of the victory banner, parasol, double fish, lotus flower, Wheel of Dharma, endless knot, treasure vase, and conch shell.

Chinese Bronze Scholar Vase with Taotie, Ming/Qing Dynasty, 17th century, China
Located in Austin, TX
A small and interesting cast bronze archaistic scholar vase with loose ring handles and taotie mask design, late Ming or early Qing Dynasty, mid 17th century, China.
The small vase of archaistic hu form, and cast with archaistic designs. Sitting on a tall splayed ring foot, the round body is cast with a large band featuring a ferocious taotie (ogre) mask. The taotie mask in this case id decidedly feline, with a ruyi shaped snout above a whiskered mouth. Two flanges stick out to either side of the mask, reminiscent of ears.
A wide, tall neck rises from the body, terminating in a slightly everted mouth. The archaistic cast design on the neck is not as clear, but most likely represents Fusang, a mythical island in the Eastern Sea where the legendary Fusang tree grows. The Fusang tree, home to the mythical Sun Bird...
