About the Item

This small treasure box from the late 19th century exemplifies the lavish splendor of the Qing-dynasty (1644-1911) decorative arts, finished with intricate surface embellishment and celebratory red-and-gold color. The rectangular box is shaped of rigid hide and embossed with gilt motifs of peony blossoms and objects of the Eight Immortals. A round brass lock plate secures the lid and simple brass drop pulls accent each side. Over a century of use have imparted an appealing, timeworn finish with subtle fading and speckled imperfections.
