About the Item

This elegant lidded box from the mid-19th century is carved from a choice specimen of burlwood, also known as yingmu or huamu. Prized for its feathery, swirling wood grain, burl wood was a favored material of the Chinese literati and was given pride of place in the scholar's studio as a source of beauty and creative inspiration. A rounded box such as this would have had a variety of uses, though its fine material and small scale suggest it was likely used for precious objects such as jewelry, weiqi game pieces or calligraphy tools.
