About the Item
A striking pair of antique Japanese abumi, dating to the Edo Period (1615-1868)
Abumi are stirrups, and were an important part of a samurai armor set.
The distinctive curved shape was designed to prevent the rider's foot from getting caught in the stirrup. The open-sided design, known as shitanaga abumi, was used by the middle Heian period and remained in use until European-style stirrups were introduced in the late 19th century.
Most surviving examples are made of iron with inlaid designs of silver or other materials, and are often covered in lacquer. The footplate is sometimes perforated to allow water to drain when crossing rivers. The interiors were often finished with red lacquer.
The use of stirrups became widespread in Japan around the 5th century. The ornate metalwork and intricate designs seen on these stirrups were a way for samurai and other military elites to showcase their wealth and status. Each samurai had a distinctive pattern for their armor, relating to the family with which they were affiliated.
