Japanese two-panel screen: Gibbons of Folklore, Edo period (17th century) Kano School painting of gibbons in Japanese fables. The left panel represents a Japanese fable of a monkey and a crab warning against the dangers of deceit. On the right is a very famous Buddhist fable about a monkey reaching for a reflection of the moon in the water, encouraging people to steer clear of illusions. Signature reads: Ichiyo-shi Einoh (Kano Einoh) (1631-1697). Kano school painting in mineral pigments on mulberry paper with a silk brocade border.
