About the Item

A 19th century Chinese four panel lacquered folding screen. The screen is a vibrant red, and is fully decorated on both sides. The designs are in tones of black, dark green and mustard yellow. The scrren is incised, and handpainted. One side features courtly scenes, with figures and pavilions in a landscape. Also on this side are eight reserves of design (four at the top and four at the bottom of the main scene) with floral designs. The reverse side has four reserves of design at the base with floral vignettes, and the main area of design feautures flowering trees, birds and rocks. Both sides of the screen are surrounded with a border of vines and flowers. The hinge hardware is decorative and unusual, with round metal hardware attaching to each panel instead of the more common simple metal hinges between each panel. The top of each panel has metal hardware on the corners, providing protection as well as being an added decorative element. The eight feet also have metal hardware.
