Each personifies the canons of the Hara School of art, whose works are generally described as precise, elegant and decorative. Painted with brilliant pigments on silk, each lavish painting demonstrates a remarkable level of proficiency. These works were painted to enchant and delight the classically educated aristocracy, to who seasonal indicators and the identification and appreciation of flora and fauna were of great importance. The Hara artists were imperial court painters holding aristocratic positions within the ranks of the court. They contributed paintings to various temples and shrines, as well as to the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Many of their paintings were stored in prominent Kyoto temples frequented predominantly by the nobility. As a result, their works were not available to the general public and to this day remain less well-known than paintings by their contemporaries. The Hara school was founded by Hara Zaichu, who combined elements of Kano, Tosa, Ming, Qing and Maruyama to create a style of painting that was admirably suited to the needs of the court. Hara Zaichu studied the painting techniques of the then dominant Kano School under Ishida Yutei (1721–86). Zaichu also took advantage of access to Ming and Qing period Chinese paintings in the collections of Kyoto shrines and temples. Zaichu studied alongside Maruyama Okyo (1733–95) who was also a strong influence on his style. Takakura Zaiko (fl.1854-1860). It is generally accepted that he was a student of Hara Zaichu (1750-1837), though some scholars suggest that he studied under Hara Zaimei (1778-1844). He originally used the art name Shito, and later Zaiko and Kouso. He moved to Nagoya from Kyoto.
