Japanese Contemporary Framed Brocade Silk Handcrafted Oshie Decorative Art, 2
Located in Takarazuka, JP
Extraordinary unique Japanese Contemporary large framed and signed traditional Oshie decorative art piece in black and cream, known as oshie (literally, “pressed pictures”) that goes back to the Edo Period (1603-1868). It is said this art form was born of the reluctance of ladies of the court and elite aristrocratic women to discard the magnificent silk kimonos and brocaded obi they had donned for a lifetime. The solution was to recycle these opulent fabrics into stunning works of art. The creator of this signed piece prides herself in using the best antique and vintage kimono and obi fabrics...

Japanese Three Panel Framed Gold Black White Porcelain Artwork by Master Artist
Located in Takarazuka, JP
Extraordinary Japanese contemporary three-panel framed porcelain artwork in gold, black and white. This is a masterpiece by a third generation master porcelain artist in the Imari-Arita region of Japan who is the descendant of an extended family of prolific porcelain and ceramic artists. The artist's profile is available upon request. The kiln started in the 19th century with traditional kinrande techniques (gold enameled porcelain), but in accordance with the philosophy of the kiln’s founder, each subsequent generation pioneered in a field of the master’s choosing. Thus, the second generation is known for its yuri-kinsai (gold foil underglaze) and the third generation for its haku-yui (intertwining of precious-metal foils). Yuri-kinsai was termed in the 1950s as a new glazing technique. The main feature is a highly transparent overglaze on the gilded porcelain, cutting out stencils of gold foil for underglaze decorations. In this exceptional work, the artist has used gold leaf, black and white for expressing the dramatic scene of Tawaraya Sotatsu's influential "Wind God and Thunder God" that is considered a Japanese National Treasure. It is a pair of two-folded screens using...

Japanese Six Panel Screen with Hotei, Edo Period, Early 19th Century
Located in Austin, TX
A delightful Japanese six panel painted paper screen featuring the beloved figure Hotei, Edo Period, early 19th century. Hotei, called Budai in China, and known as the Laughing Buddha or Fat Buddha in the West, is considered to be an emanation of Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future. In Japan, he also holds a special place as one of the Seven Lucky Gods, being the god of fortune, and protector of children. He is always portrayed as a mirthful and corpulent man, dressed in loose robes that show off his round belly. He carries a sack with him, said to be filled with treasure. As the protector of children, he is often portrayed with them playing on or around him, as he is here. The children portrayed in this screen are dressed in Chinese style clothing...

Moonlight Landscape Reflections "Starry Night" Extraordinary Stone "Painting"
Located in South Burlington, VT
An extraordinary Natural Landscape work, one of a kind. Custom framed. This Chinese extraordinary natural stone painting of cloud bands under a breath taking moon light reflectio could remind us of a similar and unique evening experience in our lives. Just look into the dark sky some starry night! The powerful and colorful depiction is executed in natural dark green- almost black, cream and yellow (limonite mineral) colors. This is called a dream stone Shih-hua. They are cut from historic Dali marble found in the Cangshan mountains of western China. These mysterious mountains, unique in the world, are known for yielding incredible and fantastic natural landscaped works of art created over tens of millions of years from mineral inclusions that affected the process of ancient organic material which transformed into limestone and finally resulted in marble- a metamorphic hard stone. This art form is centuries of years old since the Ming dynasty. Dream stones became favored art in the west particularly since the 19th century when French collectors named them Pierres de reve. This thin marble stone painting is approximately 1/4" thick and is cut from a large slab of rough material revealing incredible patterns in soft white and gray colors. Its weight is surprisingly modest- easily hung with standard hardware. Dimensions: Frame: 24 inches high and 41.75 inches wide. Site: 15 inches x 33 inches Provenance: Private Chinese collection, Yunnan, China. History of dream stone paintings: Moonlight...

Chinese Antique Six-Panel Folding Screen with Stained Glass Geometric Motifs
Located in Yonkers, NY
A Chinese antique six-panel folding screen from the early 20th century, with green, blue and yellow stained glass, geometric motifs and wooden panels. Created in China during the first half of the 20th century, this large folding screen features six panels each adorned with a careful arrangement of opaque octagonal motifs surrounded by colorful stained glass with scrolling or textured motifs. The lower section is made of delicately raised panels surrounded by recessed accents. Folding screens likely originate back to the Han Dynasty, circa 200 BC as evidence in tombs shows. The Chinese considered screens as objects of contemplation and a source of spiritual and creative inspiration. The screens were used to protect from drafts, to provide a sense of privacy or to simply partition a room. With its nice proportions and complimenting colors, this Chinese antique stained glass folding screen...

Antique Asian Paintings and Screens

Traditional Asian paintings were often created on scrolls and folding screens. Artisans made screens that could be folded up or spread out by connecting several panels using hinges. Today, antique Asian folding screens and paintings are sophisticated decorative accents that can serve as makeshift partitions to ensure privacy.

The original folding screens were created by Chinese artists. The earliest record of screens comes from the 2nd century B.C., and surviving examples date back to the Ming dynasty. Chinese painting utilizes many of the same tools as calligraphy — these screens were crafted from wood with painted panels featuring striking art or calligraphy that told cultural stories or represented nature and life in the area.

The practice was introduced to Japan, where paintings for screens were made on paper and silk, in the 8th century. These paintings frequently feature subjects such as landscapes, animals, flowers and Buddhist religious themes. Along with screens for tea ceremonies and dance backgrounds, there were screens for use in Shinto and Buddhist temples.

In the 17th century, screens began to be imported to Europe where their popularity grew. Coco Chanel famously collected Coromandel folding screens.

Traditional Asian paintings can make a tasteful addition to any wall, and screens can be used as decoration or, in the case of larger iterations, as an aesthetic way to divide a large room. Browse the selection of antique Asian paintings and screens from a variety of styles and eras on 1stDibs.
