Abstract Expressionist Oil Painting, Africa by Mary H., Framed Canvas, 1988
Located in Rancho Cucamonga, CA
An elegant Vintage Original abstract canvas painting crafted in oil on canvas with a A monumental abstract painting titled Africa, signed and dated 1988 by an artist whose signature reads “Mary Heel—”. Executed in sweeping layers of blue, gray, and ochre, the work captures a powerful sense of rhythm and organic motion that feels at once bodily and elemental. The composition unfolds in dynamic curved planes that suggest both landforms and the human form—evoking themes of ancestry, creation, and interconnectedness. Within these flowing shapes, subtle figural details emerge: a mask-like visage recalling African fertility sculpture...

Located in Tainan, TW
Fu Guoshun was born at Hebei in 1954. He was complimented as a Master of Chinese arts and crafts in 2012. It is the highest honor for an inside painting artist. There are only ten artists who earned this glory. He is also the director of China International Painting and Calligraphy Association, vice chairman of China Snuff Bottle Professional Committee, and vice-chairman of Hebei Inside painted snuff bottle Association. Since 1977, he has been studying the art of inside painting under Wang Xisan. Fu Guoshun is one of the best artists in Ji school. Mr Fu Guoshun's inside paintings are exquisite. His works include landscapes, figures, animals, flowers, and birds to calligraphy with comprehensive skills. In addition, his professions are known for their elegance, flexibility, and light. Japanese Silk Scroll of Daruma Hanabusa Itcho Edo Period
Located in Atlanta, GA
A Japanese hanging scroll attributed to Edo period painter Hanabusa Itcho (1652-1724). The artwork features a silk roundel nicely mounted in golden brocade background. The painting depicts a robed Daruma seated in meditation with his eyes widely open. The rendition of the famous monk, one of the most beloved subjects in Japanese art, was extremely minimalistic. With just a few effective ink strokes and patches of watercolor, it managed to successfully highlight the essence and spirit of Daruma. The roundel was possibly a center fragment of a larger painting by the artist and was remounted historically. Signed with one of his artist's names. It comes with a wood scroll box with ink inscription of title and artist formal name. For a painting with the same signature, see number 1881,1210,0.1719 in the collection of the British Musuem. Also a horizontal scroll...

Antique Asian Paintings and Screens

Traditional Asian paintings were often created on scrolls and folding screens. Artisans made screens that could be folded up or spread out by connecting several panels using hinges. Today, antique Asian folding screens and paintings are sophisticated decorative accents that can serve as makeshift partitions to ensure privacy.

The original folding screens were created by Chinese artists. The earliest record of screens comes from the 2nd century B.C., and surviving examples date back to the Ming dynasty. Chinese painting utilizes many of the same tools as calligraphy — these screens were crafted from wood with painted panels featuring striking art or calligraphy that told cultural stories or represented nature and life in the area.

The practice was introduced to Japan, where paintings for screens were made on paper and silk, in the 8th century. These paintings frequently feature subjects such as landscapes, animals, flowers and Buddhist religious themes. Along with screens for tea ceremonies and dance backgrounds, there were screens for use in Shinto and Buddhist temples.

In the 17th century, screens began to be imported to Europe where their popularity grew. Coco Chanel famously collected Coromandel folding screens.

Traditional Asian paintings can make a tasteful addition to any wall, and screens can be used as decoration or, in the case of larger iterations, as an aesthetic way to divide a large room. Browse the selection of antique Asian paintings and screens from a variety of styles and eras on 1stDibs.
