About the Item
Antique Japanese 2-panel Screen of Birds
Flowers in a Landscape Setting, Kano School, Edo Period. This Kachoga subject of birds and flowers contains a brilliant mix of a variety of species including a sedge of five Manchurian cranes as the central foreground subject. The crane in Japan is a representational subject of longevity, peace and fidelity. A Golden pheasant and big blossoming peonies also figure prominently and are an auspicious pairing symbolizing good fortune, honor and bravery. A red-billed blue magpie also features prominently perched in the boughs of a pine tree. The entire composition includes these primary elements as well as other smaller birds, bamboo, rose and prunus with brown hills, blue flowing water all on a gold leaf background. The pigments are black ink and mineral based colors. The painting is dry mounted as a 2-panel screen with a beige silk brocade surround and a black lacquered wood frame with metal fittings. The reverse side with paper and green silk over the interior wood frame.
Condition: Good with signs of age and wear, pigment loss in random areas and some minor buckling by the paper hinge. a hair line paper crack in the lower hill portion on the lower right panel. Splits to the backside. Chips to the black lacquer frame.
