About the Item

Antique Japanese Meiji period silk embroidered screen /room divider Byobu C.1900 Kyoto, Japan. Silk embroidered satin lacquer framed panels. Late 19th century - early 20th century Meiji Period (1868 - 1912) Similar to those seen in the Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum, Japan and the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (England). 'Of all the Japanese textiles arts, it was embroidery – the art of needlework – that most impressed foreign buyers during the Meiji period (1868-1912). Embroiderers in the Meiji era continued to use traditional techniques and also developed new formats for the Western market: large-scale wall hangings, curtains, framed panels, and folding screens.' (Threads of Silk and Gold: Ornamental Textiles from Meiji Japan by Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology University of Oxford.) In very good condition commensurate with age. One satin panel coming away from lacquered frame. Please refer to photos.
