About the Item

Antique Thai Buddhist Banner Painting, multi-coloured tempera and gold leaf on cloth, depicting Buddha Descending From Tavatimsa Heaven. An illustration of one of the eight great events of the historical Buddha’s life, his descent from the heaven of 33 Gods, Tavatisma where his mother Queen Maya was reborn. After visiting her and sharing his teachings on earth with her he descends a 3-part ladder standing on a small lotus pedestal and accompanied by the three faced Brahma holding a parasol for the Buddha’s decent, a symbol of royalty and protection. The green skinned Indra at his side. This dramatic scene is witnessed by celestial musicians and worshippers. At the foot of the serpent balustrade ladder are monks awaiting the arrival. The human worshippers are kneeling and bowing with hands clasped in front of their faces. At the side, another image of the Buddha seated on an elaborate platform under a Bodhi tree with offerings in front of the image and the devout kneeling in front. On the opposing side the fortress walls of a palace with pedestrians. At the bottom of the painting a zigzag cutaway of the earth and creatures suffering in a Buddhist hell beneath. This image is framed by a yellow foliate scroll border with an inscription on a panel near the wood dowel  end of the painting. All mounted on a contemporary silk background, wood frame and plexi-glass. Banner: 57 in. x 31-1/2 in. (145cm x 80cm) Frame: 63 in. x 36-3/4 in. (160cm x 93.2cm) Provenance: Upon Request For similar examples see: Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, 2006.27.1228 2006.27.74
