Antique Thai Vessantara Jataka Scene Painting on Cloth, Rattanakosin School, 19th Century.
A classical scene from chapter 12 in the next-to-last life of the Buddha wherein Vessantara and his family weep for joy at their reunion. They all sit compositionally balanced under a great tree where Prince Vessantara and Maddi reunite with their children and the king and queen of Sivi. All of the principal figures in gold detail hold a posture of weeping. This is communicated through the gesture of holding one hand in front of the face with the heel of the palm near the eyes, not only in Thai painting, but also in Thai dance and drama. There are an additional 9 subjects below rejoicing in bearing witness to the reunion. The scene is all enclosed within a rinceau border. The painting is framed floating between two sheets of glass with a carved hardwood frame having rounded corners in the style of the mid-20th century.
Condition: Minor Pigment loss from handling along a craquelure effect. Minor surface scratches on the hardwood frame.
