About the Item

A charming Chinese "Birds and Peony" painting, ink and color on silk, framed and glazed, Qing Dynasty, late 19th century, China. The delightful and colorful painting features a scene of a pair of long tailed birds perched on a rocky outcrop. The brightly colored birds are framed by a lush surround of blossoming peony. The large blossoms of white, blue, pink and red complementing the plumage of the birds quite nicely. Above the long tailed birds, a pair of plump swallows flit overhead, while a single butterfly dances in the corner. One fascinating and interesting thing to note is that upon closer inspection the artist's underdrawing and preparatory sketch is still visible. Chinese paintings are full of symbolism and meaning, with each bird and flower conveying specific wishes or blessings. Here, the pair of long tailed birds symbolize a wish for a long life (double longevity), while the pair of swallows espouse a desire for a harmonious home. While butterflies are symbols of beauty and freedom, the single butterfly hovering over a large peony blossom can also be interpreted as the union between man and wife. Finally, peony are celebrated for their beauty and represent wealth and honor. Reading the painting as a whole, it conveys wishes to a married couple for a long and harmonious life and a home filled with wealth and honor. The painting retains much of its vibrant color, with the reds, greens, blues, and white standing out especially well against the neutral tone of the silk. Framed in a dark hardwood frame with a silk mat, and glazed. A pair of hanging hooks to the top and a hanging wire to the back. Provenance: Private Texas family collection, collected in China in the 1910's

Chinese Early Qing Dynasty "Water and Land Ritual" Painting, 17th Century

An important Chinese 17th century early Qing Dynasty "Water and Land Ritual" painting, mineral pigment and ink on silk, mounted as a scroll, framed and glazed. The painting depicting groups of heavenly court officials and deities descending from the clouds to participate in the Liberation Rite of Land and Water. The figures all wear full, sumptuous robes, complete with hats indicating their station. The blue, green, red, black and white of the robes decorated with gilt dragon and geometric designs. This painting is interesting in that it incorporates Daosit deities and heavenly officials coming down to participate in the Buddhist rite. There are five distinct groups of figures, each with a small inscribed plaque. Some of the groups are identified as Tian Xian, or Heavenly Immortals. The group at the bottom left are identified as the Sanguan Dadi, or Three Great Emperor-Officials. The Emperor of Heaven is dressed in blue robes with gilt painted dragons. The Emperor of Water wears black robes. The Emperor of Earth wears yellow robes...
