About the Item

A Chinese two-part eight-panel screen from the 20th century, featuring low-relief carvings, gilt-painted calligraphy, and a rich brown lacquer finish. Composed of two sections with four panels each, the screen presents a visually balanced arrangement of carved and painted motifs across its vertical format. Each panel is organized into several sections: the upper register features scrolling cartouches with central rosettes carved in low relief, while the middle band is adorned with gilded Chinese calligraphy set against a dark lacquered ground. Below, horizontal carved panels give way to larger scenes depicting vases, birds and flowers, fish, or monkeys, all rendered in relief and framed by linear meander borders. The screen’s warm patina, marked by areas of wear and tonal variation, contributes to its character and historic charm. Whether positioned as a folding screen or displayed along a wall, this Chinese carved and lacquered screen offers a decorative and contemplative presence—honoring the traditional role of screens in Chinese interiors as both functional and symbolic objects. Each panel measures 13.5"W x 2"D x 54"H.
