White Heron and Reeds Kimura Buzan (1876-1942) circa 1925 Dimensions: Screen: 122 cm x 188 cm (48” x 74”) Painted across a small, four-fold screen, a heron stands on one leg, feathers extended and neck retracted against the cold. Delicately washed, elongated reeds contrast the body of the heron. Painted in white gofun (a traditional gesso-like substance made from powdered shells and animal glue) over a gold leaf surface, the appearance of the heron changes quite dramatically with variations in lighting. Due to its remarkable whiteness the heron is a symbol of Buddhist purity, as is the lotus. Kimura Buzan had a strong affinity with Buddhist subject matter, particularly during the latter part of his career, and that is what he is most admired for today. Kimura Buzan (1876-1942) was born in Ibaraki Prefecture and from a young age began studying painting under the Nanga artist Sakurai Karyo. In 1890 he moved to Tokyo to enter the Kaisei School. Buzan also studied at Kawabata Gyokusho's school of painting, the Tenshin-sha. In 1891 he entered the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1896. In 1898 his painting won a prize at the Japan Painting Association Fair and he participated as an associate member in the foundation of the Nihon Bijutsuin or Japan Art Institute, of which he became a full member in 1906. The same year he moved with his family to Izura along with Yokoyama Taikan, Shimomura Kanzan, and Hishida Shunso. With the establishment of the Bunten in 1907 Buzan represented the Nihon Bijutsuin at the exhibition, winning third place for his painting. He continued to exhibit at the Bunten, moving back to Tokyo in 1912. When the Nihon Bijutsuin reorganized in 1915 Buzan participated as a senior member (dojin). Starting in 1931 Buzan became in engaged in the painting of a mural for main hall of Koyasan Kongobu Temple, a work that was only completed in 1934. He became a councilor of the Teiten in 1935 and exhibited at the reformed Teiten in the following year. 1936 was also his final participation in the Nihon Bijutsuin's Inten exhibition. In 1937 Buzan collapsed from a cerebral haemorrhage and convalesced in Kasama. Losing the use of his right hand in 1938 he continued to work with his left, adopting the art name Hidari-Buzan (or Sabuzan, literally Left-handed Buzan). Buzan passed away on November 29, 1942 in Tokyo at the age of 66. His works are held in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Tokyo National Museum, Fukui Fine Arts Museum, Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art, MOMA Ibaraki, Ibaraki University and the Okada Museum, Hakone.

The overall composition has a feeling of flatness which draws emphasis to the surface and the three-dimensionality of the cherry blossoms. Painstakingly built-up layers of thickly applied shell-white gofun detail the voluminous blossoms and cover large areas of this tour-de-force of Japanese Nihonga painting. By simplifying the background, minimizing the number of colors and depicting the blossoms with such heavy relief, the artist has emphasized the stunning presence of the cherry tree. The type of tree depicted is the Yae-Zakura; a double-layered type of cherry blossom famed for its beauty and strength. When we think of Japanese cherry blossoms, the first thing that comes to mind is Somei Yoshino variety, which has a single flower with five almost white petals. This type is fragile and easily blown away by strong wind or rain. Most of the double-flowered cherry blossoms begin to bloom when the Somei-Yoshino falls, and the flowering period lasts longer than that of the Somei-Yoshino.
