About the Item

Original painting of Green Tara, the Bodhisattva of action and enlightened activity. Painted with traditional pigments on handmade Udagami washi paper from Nara, mounted as a scroll in Nara by Shosaku Yoshimura using traditional Japanese materials and techniques in a modern composition. This scroll comes with a traditional Japanese kiri wood box for safe storage while not on display. Hakogaki (signed and titled box) by the artist. About the Artist, Mayumi Oda: 1966 graduated from Tokyo University of Fine Arts; 1966-68 studied at Pratt Graphic Center, New York. Mayumi Oda is a contemporary Japanese-born American printmaker whose artistic vision focuses on images of goddesses. Some are traditional, and some she invents from Buddhist, Taoist, Shinto, Christian and ancient Greek spirituality and folklore. Her subject matter is often environmental and she herself is a founder of Plutonium-Free Future, an organization dedicated to safe energy and the elimination of nuclear weapons. She is often described as the "Japanese Matisse" because her works are full of verve, color, and free-flowing lines. She enjoys working in a series. Humor and a kind of naive charm characterize her work. The brilliant colors have an unusual transparency. Oda's works are held in numerous museums around the world and prestigious private collections. About Green Tara: Green Tara is Tara's most dynamic manifestation. Her color symbolizes youthful vigor and activity. The Buddhist Lord of karma (action), Amoghasiddhi, is also associated with the green color, thus signifying that they belong to the same family. This is a further affirmation of the perception that Green Tara is a goddess of action. She is often depicted in a posture of ease with right leg extended, signifying her readiness to spring into action. The left leg is folded in the contemplative position on the lotus pedestal, the two together thus symbolizing the integration of wisdom and art. Her left hand, in the gesture of granting refuge holds the stem of a blue lotus that floats over her left shoulder as a symbol of purity and power. With her right hand she makes the boon-granting gesture.
