About the Item
The pair of panels are done in a fine gold lacquer with bone, mother of pearl
abalone shell inlays and where made in the mid 19th century. Most likely from a cabinet and retaining the carved frame surrounds from the cabinet. The gold is rich and done in a matte and burnished effect creating the setting of a hilly and rocky landscape. The foreground of animals and trees and flowering branches is accomplished in stained and unstained carved bone. Interspersed throughout this work the details are picked out in mother of pearl and or abalone shell creating a very lively and rich textural surface. The original carved wood framing to these panels is a perfect foil for the works and helps to set the stage for the gold lacquer against the flat carved floral surface of the frame. The larger single panel of Lacquer is from the early 20th century and depicts a fierce eagle in the process of landing on a pine branch. This panel is on a black ground while the eagle is done in gold both matte and burnished along with silver lacquers creating a dynamic moment in rich material. The pines and associated branches are asymmetrically placed within the field of vision to heighten the effect of life and movement. This work is signed and chop marked by the artist. All three items have been framed in the same frame material and the pair have been overpainted to companion the works they surround. This framing is fairly new and in good shape allowing all the works to be hung in close proximity which is how we purchased them from the estate.
