About the Item

A very finely painted two panel 'shunga' screen with scenes of naked erotic lovers in union. The scene on the left panel simply depicts the lovers in union atop their futon with their bedding cradling them. The right panel includes details of a domestic interior. At the head of the lover's futon is a meal tray with the shared bowl of sashimi which is to be enjoyed, post-coital. Behind them the room looks out onto a courtyard garden setting and other diving in the image indicate the room's scale. The artwork is sits in card mounts with nashi-ji effect gold. Some scuff marks in the mount can be found, but it is hard for the eye to pay attention to these given the content of the paintings and the fine art work. On the reverse of the left panel are a number of dented areas, varying in size from 3mm to 15mm. More pictures available on request. The hinges are in good condition. Materials: ink, pigment and gold on paper, with timber frame Dimensions: H 106cm x W 182cm x 2.2cm when opened. Dimensions: H: 106cm x W 91cm x 4.5cm when closed.
