About the Item
Antique Japanese 6 panel screen from the early Edo period (C1650). One of a pair (both available). This magnificent golden screen shows an omnipotent or 'gods eye' view, down through the clouds and willow trees to the stream below, showing a technique in the early use of perspective and to display a sense of divinity in nature.
The use of 22ct gold leaf in squares was already in use but its' lavish and extensive use was an innovation when newly built castles and solid homes needed both reflective light inside with nature outside.
The screen has been lovingly restored and remounted in recent times.
