About the Item

A beautiful and very engaging Edo Period (1603-1868) Japanese Tosa school original painting featuring two officials from the Imperial Court. The Tosa school (土佐派,) of Japanese painting was founded in the early Muromachi period (14th–15th centuries), and was devoted to yamato-e, paintings specializing in subject matter and techniques derived from ancient Japanese art, as opposed to schools influenced by Chinese art, notably the Kanō school. Until the 17th century, the Tosa school painted for the court and aristocratic patrons, which favored such painting subjects as scenes from the classic Tale of Genji (源氏絵) by Murasaki Shikibu, but in later years, the school's range expanded to include other themes such as nature, landscape and bird and flower paintings. The work is signed in Japanese with notation as well as further information on the frame verso. The fine detail and use of natural color makes this quite an attractive work. Would be a great addition to any Japanese or Asian art/painting collection or make for an eye catching stand alone accent artwork in about any setting. The painting is framed and ready to display.
