About the Item

A beautiful, alluring, wonderfully composed and engaging hand-painted large pair of six-panel Japanese/Asian Byobu folding screens depicting an almost magical/ mythical village scene with floating golden clouds Highlighted with gold leaf and gold dust), tall gorgeously detailed forest trees, flowing waters and lakes, all set against a vast mountainous landscape. Various characters, animals, and creatures interact within the landscape seemingly engaged in various acts - some commonplace, others of magic and mysticism. We believe this screen is a Japanese Kano school painting done in the Chinese style and depicts literary characters from Chinese folklore tales. The Kano school, which was founded by Kano Masanobu, is one of the most famous schools of Japanese painting. The Kano school of painting was the dominant style of painting from the late 15th century until the Meiji period which began in 1868. The school began by reflecting a renewed influence from Chinese painting but later developed a brightly colored and firmly outlined artistic style for large panels which reflected distinctively Japanese aesthetics and traditions. We are listing the screens as from the Meiji period (1868-1912) but based on the style of painting, we believe they could perhaps be older and more likely from the Edo (1603-1868). Clearly a special and quite unique set. We have not come across another pair of Byobu screens quite like them. These engaging screens are sure to stand out in almost any collection and/or setting whether used as a room divider or hung carefully on the wall as a work of art. A special and rare pair. Approximate dimensions of each screen when fully extended: 68.5" high, 144" wide, 1" deep. Together the screens are roughly : 68.5" high and 288" wide (24 feet) Approximate folded dimensions of each individual screen: 68.5" high, 24" wide, 4" deep.

In very good vintage condition with some mild staining to the backing cloth (nothing to front images) and light natural organic wear consistent with age/use (please see photos) else very clean with bold, bright colors. Beautiful and engaging overall.
