About the Item
A beautiful, quite engaging four-panel Showa Period Japanese Nanban (Namban) Byobu folding screen depicting the exotic arrival by ship and activities of Southern Barbarians (Portuguese and later other Europeans) in Japan. These type screens, painted in the Nihonga school style, served not only as works of decorative art but also as important historical and artistic documents during the Edo period of the relationship between Portugal and Japan. The vibrant, rich colors against the gold leaf and intricate painted detail (notice the individual costumes and facial expressions of those portrayed) really makes this quite an attractive work.
Original decorative period brass hardware adds another wonderful touch.
Signed (in black ink) and sealed (in red) by the artist.
Likely from the early to mid Showa period (1926-1989) but perhaps older.
A beautiful and somewhat rare work. Would be a great addition to any Japanese or Asian art/screen collection or make for an eye catching stand alone accent artwork in almost any setting whether used as a room divider or hung on the wall as a work of art.
