About the Item

A gorgeous, quite fascinating hand-painted six-panel Japanese Byobu folding screen depicting a rather engaging androgynous or erotic court scene (it has been suggested to us that this could be a lesbian party). The central figure and characters on both sides appear to be women dressed masculinely in men's kimonos. One woman on the right has her hand inside her partner's kimono on her chest while the others look on playfully. It was suggested that they could also be Onnagata - effeminate men (or male actors who play female roles in kabuki theatre). A rather risque work. The deep, rich colors, gold leaf, complex design/composition, and beautiful hand-painted detail make this an attractive and special work. Signed in ink and sealed in red by the artist. Original decorative period brass hardware adds another wonderful touch. This gem of a screen is sure to stand out in almost any setting whether used as a room divider or hung on the wall as a work of art. A beautiful and highly unique screen. We have not come across another one quite like it. Likely Showa period but perhaps older. Approximate dimensions when fully extended: 36" high, 106.5" wide, and .6" deep. Approximate folded dimensions: 36" high, 18.25" wide, 4.25" deep.

Japanese Six Panel Screen with Hotei, Edo Period, Early 19th Century
Located in Austin, TX
A delightful Japanese six panel painted paper screen featuring the beloved figure Hotei, Edo Period, early 19th century. Hotei, called Budai in China, and known as the Laughing Buddha or Fat Buddha in the West, is considered to be an emanation of Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future. In Japan, he also holds a special place as one of the Seven Lucky Gods, being the god of fortune, and protector of children. He is always portrayed as a mirthful and corpulent man, dressed in loose robes that show off his round belly. He carries a sack with him, said to be filled with treasure. As the protector of children, he is often portrayed with them playing on or around him, as he is here. The children portrayed in this screen are dressed in Chinese style clothing...
