Hand-painted Shugendo image on see-through silk, with ‘Karasu tengu’ (Crow-billed goblin) ridding on the Inari fox of divine messenger, expressing the final figure of ultimate monk having the “force” (flying ability and supernatural power) trained by Mountain asceticism, but with such unusually funny faces with cool eyes that make you a little fool somehow as a rare type. Showa period, 20th century, Japan. 46 x 128 cm (18.11 x 50.39in).
