About the Item

A wonderful and quite captivating original watercolor landscape painting by Japanese artist Kakunen (Tokutaro) Tsuruoka (1892–1977). The work features a dawn view of Mount (Mt.) Fuji from a distance. Forest trees in the foreground help compose the famed mountain. The painting is signed (in black ink) and sealed (in red) by Kakunen with his dated (1927) and also signed artist label on the verso. Tokutaro Tsuruoka (he would later change/update his name) was born in the Ueno area of Tokyo in 1892. He was orphaned at the age of four amidst a typhoid epidemic. In 1905, he boarded a steamer on his own bound for San Francisco where he later found a job working for an antique dealer who would eventually become an advocate for his art and partner in business (strangely after a lawsuit between the two was settled in Kakunen's favor). Kakunen became a well known Japanese artist and art dealer but the second world war and subsequent years in a Japanese -American internment camp all but destroyed his desire to produce art. He would later move and end his days in New York City where his family acquired Daruma gallery, a framing shop and art gallery. Today Kukunen is getting the recognition as a master painter and an important Japanese-American artist that he undoubtedly deserves. His work can be found in the Smithsonian Art Museum in Washington D.C. This unique and quite rare painting would be a great addition to any Japanese/Asian art or painting collection (or Mount Fuji art collectors) or make for a eye catching stand alone accent artwork in about any setting The painting is framed and ready to display.
