About the Item

A late 18th century Chinese carved Coromandel screen with beautiful warm brown background. On one side is a landscape and figure design with pavilions and figures in a rocky landscape, capped by ethereal clouds. The reverse side has a fanciful forest scene with deer, cranes, trees and flowers. Reserves at the base on the side with landscape and figure design feature auspicious objects, and the reserves on the opposite side have mythical animals. The entire screen, front and back is surrounded by narrow floral borders. The feet of the screen have brass caps, and the screen is inscribed and dated 1687, but this is likely an ode to an older artist, and this screen is later. Each panel is 17" wide, and the screen will look beautiful either shown in two sections of four panels, for two corners of a room, or flanking a doorway or fireplace, or used contiguously.
