About the Item
Impressive pair of Japanese two-panel byobu screens featuring late 18th-century edo period applied vignettes, poems, and paintings in various formats over a dramatic gold leaf square ground. The paintings are executed by artist of the Nanga and Maruyama-Shijo schools. They include Raisho (1796-1871), Yasunobu, Hironari, Tetsuzan, Setsu-ho, and others. Cyclical date Mizunoto-ushi reads 1793. The vignettes are intriguing and beautifully laid out over the gold leaf. The poems are in various shapes. Harimaze-e prints became popular in the mid-19th century. Sold as a pair. From an estate in San Francisco, CA.

- Condition:Wear consistent with age and use. Beautifully crafted with solid joinery. Vignettes have age appropriate wear with fading, foxing, stains, and losses as seen in photos. Minor losses on gold leaf that are difficult to see. Reverse side has small repairs.
