About the Item
Offered is a "Phrabot" - an antique Thai Temple scroll painting depicting village life around the temple. The painting is attributed to the "Rattanakosin School" (1787 - 1910), and this one done in matte pigments on textured cloth or board most likely dates back to the late 19th Century, however, the black enamel frame is from the mid 20th Century.
This is one of two available - both acquired from a decorator's estate in the early 1970s. It measures 41" in width, 75" in height with its frame, and the 35.75 W x 70" H within the frame.
The creation of a Phrabot had a deep religious meaning, meshing the concept of earning merit, a key element of Buddhism. Through a Phrabot, merit could be earned by sponsoring or donating to a monastery, much like tithing. Many of the original Phrabots have been lost or damaged due to the fragility of the cloth and paint pigments, and the effects of a humid climate. The painting style of this Phrabot is from the reigns of King Rama IV and V (1851 - 1910), which marked the final classical period of the Rattanakosin School.
There is a visible small tear, but it is difficult to discern, and the painting has remained framed with a glass shield since it was acquired.

- Condition:Wear consistent with age and use. There is a minor tear on the canvas, as it was purchased. The black lacquer frames have some discernible scratches that could be retouched. Any wear is commensurate with their age and past handling.
