About the Item

A captivating portal to the "Floating World" (ukiyo) of 19th-century Edo, this authentic antique woodblock print by Kikukawa Eizan (1787-1867) captures the very "alchemy of elegance" for which the master was renowned. This work is a premier example of the bijinga (pictures of beautiful women) genre, an art form that Eizan perfected in the wake of his great predecessor, Utamaro. The print depicts the celebrated courtesan (oiran) Shinoko, identified by the name cartouche in the upper right. A superstar of her day, Shinoko was a high-ranking figure from the famed Tsuru-ya (Crane House), one of the most prominent establishments in the exclusive, walled district of Shin Yoshiwara. She is captured here in a moment of public spectacle: the oiran dōchū, or formal procession, as she parades through the district's main thoroughfare accompanied by her young attendant (kamuro). Eizan, a dominant artist of the Bunka era (1804-1818), was the last great master of the classical bijinga style. This work showcases his signature lyricism: the graceful, S-curved posture of the courtesan, the intricate, multi-layered patterns of her magnificent robes, and the quiet refinement of her expression. Unlike the harsher, more earthly realism that followed, Eizan’s work retains a delicate and ethereal grace. Presented in a simple, modern gallery frame, this piece bridges the gap between historical artifact and timeless art. The delicate, muted colours and clear, confident lines complement both modern and traditional interiors. The print's notable patina and honest, even toning are consistent with its 200-year age, serving as a testament to its authenticity and journey through time. As seen in the photographs, this authentic print has been professionally conserved and housed in a museum-quality, archival matte black frame with a wide, neutral acid-free mat, and AR70 antiglare and UV-resistant glass fitted.
