A prolific artist and designer of the shin-hanga movement, Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) was one of most important printmakers in modern Japan. His work, mostly traditional Japanese landscape stylishly composed, was influenced by Western art. With such infusion, they display a new dimensional depth and realistic ambience. Especially many of his nocturnal scenes emphasized on the atmospheric effect by playing with light and shadow.
