About the Item
Japanese woodblock print by Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949), entitled Zojoji Temple in Snow. The work was created by the artist in January Showa 8th year (1933) and depicts a serene snowy scene in front of main gate of of Zojoji Temple in Tokyo. The vermilion color of the gate contrasted dramatically against the white snow and grey sky. A few visitors in traditional kimonos with umbrellas added a strong sense of nostalgic ambience to the scenery. The artist masterfully used bokashi (color gradation) for the fore and background to effectively create a tranquil, dream-like atmosphere. Signed in plate lower right with the artist's name and seal. Title and date on right margin.
The print was first published in 1933 by Doi Hangaten as part of the Tokyo Views series. The type E publisher seal on the right margin indicate this is a print dated pre-1962, likely postwar, although the seal may have also been used prewar.
A fine print with strong impression and in great condition, near pristine.
Zojoji is a Jōdo-shū Buddhist temple located in Tokyo, Japan. Established in 1393, the temple is known for its deep connection with the Tokugawa clan, the rulers of Japan during the Edo period. A popular destination, the snowing wintery scenery at the temple appeared in many contemporary artists' work, including Kawase Hasui.

Japanese Woodblock Print Misty Evening Shinobazu Pond Shiro Kasamatsu
By Shiro Kasamatsu
Located in Atlanta, GA
A poetically ambient Japanese woodblock print by Shiro Kasamatsu (1898-1991). Entitled "Kasumu Yube, Shinobazu Chihan" (Misty Evening at Shinobazu Pond), the print is one of the best-known landscape works by the artist. In an unusual color variation of near monotone "Arizuri" blue, the print depicts a spring evening by the pond when the sunset is receding into the night. The dim light with a soft glow was wonderfully reflected in the image. Composed in a perspective that is more western view, the image of the figures taking the steps under the Torii gate plays hide and seek through the branches of the weeping willows by the pond. The nearly all blue color, facilitated only with the dark silhouette of the trunk, renders the imagery a moody emotion.
On the left margin there is the Title in Japanese (霞む夕べ 不忍池畔)and the artist's name Kasamatsu Shiro...
