About the Item

A beautifully composed and colored woodblock print by famed Japanese shin-hanga artist/printmaker Ito Shunsui (1898-1972) titled "Garden in Early Summer (Shoka no Niwa)" though it is sometimes referred to as Early Summer Garden. The print features a Bijin-ga (a beautiful woman) wearing a butterfly patterned kimono sitting in a luxurious green garden accentuated by blossoming red and white azaleas on an early summer day. The piece is a double Oban limited edition (of which this is number 164 of 300) woodblock print in colors published by the Momose Print Company of Tokyo (Shinsui did some designs for Momose in the 1960s separate from the images he created for Watanabe Shozaburo ). It is based on an earlier painting by the artist. A copy of this work can be found in the Auckland Museum, New Zealand.
