About the Item
A beautifully composed and richly colored woodblock print by famed Japanese shin-hanga artist/printmaker Ito Shunsui (1898-1972) titled "Snow at the Shrine (Shatô no yuki)" from Shinsui's The First Series of Modern Beauties (The work is also sometimes referred to as "The Grounds of a Shinto Shrine in Snow"). The work features an image of a beautiful young woman walking delicately along a snow covered path (She wears tall geta/wooden sandals to keep her feet dry) between a large stone lantern and arching, venerable pine tree, her umbrella protecting her from any falling snow. The detail in her dark garment/kimono and snow laden tree branches is really quite wonderful.
This print was created in Winter, 1930 and is from a limitted edition of 250 (numbered on the verso) of which few prints survive today, thus exceptionally rare and quite scarce. This is Shinsui’s only full-length portrait of a beauty set in an outdoor environment.
The print is signed in black ink and sealed in red by the artist with the publisher's (Watanabe Shozaburo) 6mm circular mark/seal in the bottom right corner.
Literature: “The Women of Shin Hanga”, plate 41, page 182. Reigle Newland, Amy, and Hamanaka Shinji, The female image: 20th century prints of Japanese beauties, 2000, p. 66, pl. 61.
A copy of this work can be found in the Los Angeles County Museum (LACMA), The Japanese Gallery, Kensington, The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) amongst others.
