A rare 300 year old volume from Japan. This is a complete antique signed woodblock print book "Shell Fish Watchers Guide." Depicts original woodblock prints of Japanese shell fish from all-over Japan as known in 1712- over two hundred fifty years ago. Included are all manner of shell fish: clams, conch, mollusks, crabs, and even jelly fish and more. Good detailed woodblock prints are immediately frameable. Details: WAKAN SANSAI ZUE vol. 47 Author: RYOUAN TERASHIMA Date; SHOTOKU 2 (1712) 42 pages. Most of these pages include Woodblock print illustrations. The book's date and an artist is reported in: IWANAMI(publisher), "KOKUSHO SO MOKUROKU the Japanese classical books catalogue 18th century Each woodblock print was folded and inserted accordion style so you may notice normal and original almost imperceptible fold lines mid section as well as toned areas from appropriate age. Our thread bound album containing Fine 10 inch x 7.25 inch wood block prints covering all manner of shell fish incouding: crabs, clams, conch, jelly fish, and many more mollusks. Complete with original blue album cover just the way we like to find them. You can literally marvel for hours enjoying thumbing through these rare albums and dozens of 200 plus year old prints included. They are printed on washi paper and traditionally thread hand sewn. The connected accordion style pages are beautifully presented in an original handmade and hand bound album format. The prints are easily removable. Quality: All woodblock prints were printed from washi paper of that day and are in good condition with sharp impressions. Some prints have foxing from age. Chinese extraordinary natural stone "painting" with hardwood frame Sea and Mountains IV This Chinese extraordinary natural stone "painting" of a mountain range in white and gray colors is called a dream stone Shih-hua. They are cut from historic Dali marble found in the Cangshan mountains of western China. These mysterious mountains, unique in the world, are known for yielding incredible and fantastic natural landscaped works of art created over tens of millions of years from mineral inclusions that affected the process of ancient organic material which transformed into limestone and finally resulted in marble- a metamorphic hard stone. This art form is centuries of years old since the Ming dynasty. Dream stones became favored art in the west particularly since the 19th century when French collectors named them Pierres de reve. This thin marble stone "painting" is approximately 1/4" thick and is cut from a large slab of rough material revealing incredible patterns in soft white and gray colors. Its weight is surprisingly modest- easily hung with standard hardware. On occasion, private collectors would invite an artisan to inscribe a poetic description onto their more important dream stones and in this case the artists' seal mark and calligraphy translation reads: Dimensions: Frame 12 inches high and 20 inches wide.
