Ok, You “Silly Goose” … Time to get SERIOUS!!!! LOL!! This is a wonderful pair of vintage Japanese or Asian Fine Art Lithograph Prints by Tesshu Tokusai bearing tags and titled “Reeds with Geese Resting” and “Reeds with Geese in Flight.” They are composed of Fine Prints inset in lovely grass cloth mattes
encased within dark faux bamboo inner and outer frames. The original watercolor was created by Tesshu Tokusai in the 14th Century and these are Fine Art Lithograph prints of that masterpiece printed in the mid to late 20th century. They are GORGEOUS, to say the least!!!! Tokusai’s was a renowned Japanese painter known for his mastery of bokuseki style technique... which basically is the omission of color. Tokusai mastered this technique and incorporated it with Zen Buddhism; hence, his distinctive style. His subtle calibrations of brush strokes and ink tones seem uncomplicated and deceptively simple but his creation embodies a definitive depth of feeling and creativity. Each Fine Print bears a minimalistic scene composed of Asian geese, bamboo stalks, reeds, landscape, and a distant sky full of freedom and opportunity for a fabulous feathered fowl. Opportunities for your imagination are endless and enthusiastically encouraged! They are going to be MARVELOUS on any wall, in any room and are sure to demonstrate peace, Zen, creativity, superb style, and a bit of historical Japanese artistic magnificence!! They have it ALL!!!
Tesshu Tokusai was born around 1366 in Kyoto, Japan. He began his artistic journey with the guidance of renowned Japanese Zen monk and painter Sesshu Tosetsu. This teaching and mentorship shaped his aesthetic abilities and instilled a deep appreciation in him for simplicity, asymmetry, and a stillness in his strokes. His work is recognized for his mastery of bokuseki which is a technique characterized by the deliberate omission of color. It embodies the core tenets of Zen Buddhism which are emptiness, impermanence, and the importance of perceiving reality without conceptual interference. Bokuseki artists seek to capture the essence of a scene through tonal variations they feel can only be achieved solely through black ink. Emphasis on forms and texture rather than colors
visual embellishments. Among Tesshu Tokusai’s most celebrated works is “Reeds and Geese” still housed in the Togugawa Art Museum in Nagoya. This painting was accomplished around 1406 and exemplifies the eminence of Tokusai’s bokuseki style. Today, “Reeds and Geese” remains an excursion site for historians, artists, and tourists and his work continues to inspire artists globally. Still today, Tesshu Tokusai has a profound contribution to the Japanese artistic heritage. -WahooArt.
