About the Item
This woodblock print by Kawase Hasui (1883–1957), entitied Chuzenji Temple at Utagahama Beach, was created in Showa 6th year, 1931. The work depicts a red Torri gate leading to the view on the eastern bank of Lake Chuzenji, located in Nikko, Japan. Two figures, appearing to be pilgrims, walk toward the edge of the water where ferry boats await.
The print is signed with artist's name and his read seal in plate lower right corner. The left lower corner bears the 6mm round seal of Watanabe Shozaburo (used intermittently between 1915-1989). Title and date were on the left margin.
Note that it is well accepted now that it is not possible to date the print precisely based on the seal. This print has a strong impression and wonderful color with subtlety.
