About the Item

A wonderfully designed, quite atmospheric original woodblock print by famed Japanese artist Kawase Hasui (1883-1957). This print is titled "Lakeside Shower, Matsue (Chihan no ame (Matsue)). The work was created in 1932 and it depicts a moody, darkened seaside landscape scene with a lone boatman seeking shelter under the dark gray rain clouds of an impending storm. The boatman is dwarfed by the grandeur of the landscape that surrounds him. It is a beautiful, darkly composed moment. The work is hand signed in pencil in English by Hasui -extremely rare as we have only seen one other example of this. It is signed Hasui and sealed Kawase within the lower left corner of the image and was published by Watanabe Shozaburo. References: Narazaki Muneshige, Kawase Hasui mokuhanga shu, 1979, p. 111, pl 333 Kendall Brown, Kawase Hasui: The complete woodblock prints, 2003, Vol. I, p. 91; Vol. II, p. 425, no. 269 A coveted and again rare hand signed image by Hasui. Would make a fantastic addition to any Japanese or Asian art/ print collection or collectors of Hasui's work or an eye-catching stand-alone accent artwork in about any setting. Hasui's work can be found in numerous prominent collections/museums including: Los Angeles County Museum of Art Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Harvard Art Museums Museum of New Zealand Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Matted and custom framed in a beautiful wood frame. Ready to display. Framed dimensions: 19.5" high, 24" wide, .5" deep. Viewable image: 10" x 15"
