About the Item

A beautiful and richly colored oban-sized woodblock print by famed Japanese artist Kawase Hasui. This print is titled "Kasuga Shrine in Nara" and comes from Hasui's series: Collection of Scenic Views of Japan II, Kansai Edition. The work was originally published in 1933 and it depicts two Japanese women under a protective umbrella admiring the red temple/shrine as rain falls around them. A beautifully composed serene moment. Kasuga Grand Shrine (Kasuga-Taisha) is a Shinto shrine in Nara. It was established in 768 CE and has been rebuilt several times over the course of centuries. The shrine is famous for its many interior bronze lanterns, as well as the over three thousand stone lanterns that lead up the shrine. The path to Kasuga Shrine passes through a deer park in which deer are able to roam freely and are believed to be sacred messengers of the Shinto gods that inhabit the shrine and surrounding mountainous terrain. The shrine is now registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The woodblock print is signed Hasui and sealed Kawase. It was published by Hasui's printer Watanabe Shozaburo (and is perhaps a lifetime post-war printing). A coveted image by Hasui. Would make a fantastic addition to any Japanese or Asian art/ print collection or collectors of Hasui's work or an eye-catching stand-alone accent artwork in about any setting. Hasui's work can be found in numerous prominent collections/museums including: Los Angeles County Museum of Art Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Harvard Art Museums Museum of New Zealand Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
