Artist: Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) Title: The Firemen's Dezomeshiki (New Year's Parade) Played by Kabuki Actors. Triptych. Publisher: Asano Eizo Date: 1878 Size: (R) 24.6 x 35.9 (C) 24.1 x 35.7 (L) 24 x 35.5 cm Kunichika Toyohara represents one of the last artists at the beginning of the Meiji period (1868-1912) who continued to make ukiyo-e prints with the full respect to the old-school, traditional ways. He was of a central importance for the production of actors' portraits (yakusha-e) and pictures of theatre performances (shibai-e) at that time. Dezomeshiki is an annual event that sees firemen performing acrobatic tricks at hair-raising heights to warn the public about fire safety. With historic roots, this January festival draws crowds by drawing from the past. After the Great Fire of Meireki destroyed much of Edo in 1657, firemen brigades were organised and they became the true heroes of the day. This event is imagined here by Kunichika as performed by actors wearing firemen clothes and carrying traditional matoi (standards) inscribed with their brigade's number. The standards also indicated the position of the firefighter responsible for the communication and orders. Moreover, to carry them was seen as a special honour. From mid-19th century onwards, firemen's coats were increasingly shown in woodblock prints and considered stylish and highly fashionable. This was also influenced by the fact that in most of the prints popular actors served as models to show the firemen's coats. They were the idols of many townspeople and among the trendsetters of those days.
