About the Item
An exceptionally rare diptych set of silkscreen/woodblock prints by celebrated Japanese American (Hawaiian) artist Mayumi Oda. This set is titled "Sea Goddess" and is from her revered Seasons series (this work is alternatively titled "Summer") and features her highly coveted Sea Goddesses frolicking amidst the gently swirling, hypnotic deep blue ocean waves and floating clouds. The scene evokes a sense of inner tranquility and peaceful spiritual contemplation.
The limited edition prints are hand-pencil signed, titled (in English and Japanese), and numbered (12/35) by the
artist.
Internationally known as the "Matisse of Japan", Mayumi Oda was born in Japan into a Zen Buddhist (which permeates her work) family in 1941. She studied at Tokyo University of Fine Arts and later at the Pratt Institute in New York. In 2000, she started Ginger Hill, an organic farm and retreat center on the Big Island of Hawaii where she has resided since.
Mayumi's art can be found in numerous permanent collections and museums including:
The Museum of Modern Art (New York, NY)
The Museum of Fine Arts (Boston, MA)
Yale University Art Gallery (New Haven, CT)
The Library of Congress (Washington, DC)
The National Museum of Asian Art (Smithsonian, Washington, DC)
The British Museum (London, UK)
One of the images from this diptych can be found at The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
The artist also had a Japanese master mounter make a two-part folding screen with the same Sea Goddess diptych image. It is currently listed for $118,000.
These works would be a great addition to any collectors of Oda's work or Japanese art or make for an eye-catching stand-alone accent artwork in about any setting.
The two prints are professionally matted (with what appears to be velvet) and framed.
