About the Item
A rare complete suite of five Dames Chinoises et Madchoues, from the Bat Series, created in 1942 by Paul Jacoulet (French, 1896-1960). These woodblock prints (dai-oban) were perhaps the most elaborate and complex design by the artist and also the most expensive and enduring work among his repertoires.
The set comprising: The Confidant (La Confidente); The Bowl of Red Fish (Le Bocal de Poissons Rouges); In the Official Box (Dans la Loge Officielle); The Favorite (La Favorite); and Before the Audience (Avant l'Audience). All from the same edition 141 out of 150.
The prints are attached to the original mats as shown. Each signed in pencil: Paul Jacoulet, with artist's red ink bat seal and seal of the carver Maeda and printer Fuji (under the mat). Each print is marked with edition 141/150 verso and the mat has the hand-written title in French likely by Jacoulet himself.
Provenance:
Property from An American collection, purchased directly from Paul Jacoulet, and thence by descendants. The collector was on assignment in Japan with press credentials post war and became friends with Jacoulet and remained pen pals for life.

Pair Japanese Woodblock Prints La Mariee and Le Marie by Paul Jacoulet
By Paul Jacoulet
Located in Atlanta, GA
An assembled pair of Japanese Woodblock print by Paul Jacoulet (French, 1896-1960) entitled La Mariee and Le Marie, Seoul Coree (The Bride and The Groom). Created in 1948 and 1950, the two prints were not intentionally designed by Jacoulet as a matching pair. However, it became popular among his collectors to pair them as a couple due to the subject matter and the complimentary and symmetrical composition.
La Mariee shows a shy bride against a rather plain window like background which made her elaborate wedding gown pop. Silver and MOP mica were used both in the background and on her dress, the sash and its embroidery. It is signed in plate and marked with the Red Owl stamp. Le Marie sets the groom slightly back as a "floating figure" against a more elaborate Korean folding screen...

Rare Five Japanese Signed Oshi-E Textile Art Panels Meiji Period
Located in Atlanta, GA
On offer is a set of five Japanese textile art panels called Oshi-E circa Meiji Period (1868-1912). This unusual set of panels depict various aspects of daily life in Edo time with beautiful details. Some of these panels are snapshots of the buzzling commercial activities at the marketplace, providing insight into the signages, architecture, costumes and how people interacted within a historical and pictorial context. Other panels depict daily leisure activities such as lounging in the park or visiting friends. The realistic rendering and attention to details are not short of "photographic" quality. From the signage of the shops to the motions and attires of the individual characters, from the hairstyle, small ornaments, down to the facial expression, were all recorded in great details. Each panel was signed with the artist's name Yukihana in Kanji with a red seal.
These panels are unframed and await your custom touch (framing with inner gilt spacer and mat costs about 250-500 depending on the material chosen, see a framed example in the last picture of a single framed panel we have for sale). We offer them for sale individually, but it will be great for a collector to consider the whole set so that they can stay together.
The Oshi-E (also known as kiritori zaiku) is a type of ornamental textile art dated back to the Muromachi period (1392-1573). It started among the elite aristocratic women in Kyoto before spreading wider in the Japanese society. Throughout Edo and Meiji period, Oshi-E were sometimes used to make offerings to the altars in the temple and in the late 19th century, it was exported to the west along with the other embroidery textile art. Oshi-E was made by using silk wadding to create a relief design. Various silk fabric swaps and sometimes wires and tassels, often recycled from older kimonos...
