Artist: Utamaro Kitagawa (1753-1806) Title: Two Courtesans in Matsubaya Tea House Publisher: Iwatoya Kisaburo Published: circa 1791-1804 The most admired of Utamaro’s works are bust portraits. Some of these are pictures of celebrated beauties of the day, some are anonymous character portrayals. He recognised that such an approach was unusual at the time and even signed his work ‘Utamaro the physiognomist’. He was not just an artist of beautiful women, but also of the human condition. Women were a constant source of inspiration for Utamaro and his works stress the physical nature of the human body, while simultaneously exploring their demeanour and attempt to express their feelings and innermost drives. His works of bijinga explored a range of types of women and nuances of their moods in a way not previously attempted in Ukiyo-e. Utamaro’s sensuous female beauties generally are considered the finest and most evocative bijinga in all of Ukiyo-e and his reputation has remained undiminished since. His work is known worldwide, and he is generally regarded as one of the greatest Ukiyo-e artists of all time. This print shows two courtesans side by side, in a bust portrait. One of them seems to be whispering to her friend who is covering her mouth with her sleeve, a polite attempt to hide her smile or surprise. Both women wear kimono with flower patterns and display elaborate hairstyles in courtesan fashion.

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor fading. Light foxing and horizontal centrefold. Minor crease marks on the left-land side. The bottom edge is slightly frayed. Paper residue on the back of the print (top and bottom right edges), perhaps from previous backing.
