About the Item
Unusual Chinese Scholars’ Incense Tray, beautifully crafted of wood covered in a parquetry of small pieces of coconut wood in a “Cracked Ice” pattern, small footed base with flared rim with beaded edge. Complete with a Japanese Collectors’ wood storage box labeled: “Chinese coconut rare wood tray made for incense burner”, minor signs of wear and use, otherwise fine condition. 1-1/2 in. high x 14-5/8 in. x 9-7/8 in. 19th century.

For another scholar’s item made from coconut shell in the cracked ice pattern see Bonham’s London Fine Chinese Art 9 November 2017, lot#105. Having an 18th century attribution and the following footnote: ”Chests and indeed any piece of furniture made with coconut-shell are very rare. This unique material was cut and crafted with great skill to create a singularly remarkable surface. The few objects that do contain coconut timber or shells were mostly brush pots or weiqi counter bowls and covers; see M.Flacks, Custodians of the Scholar's Way: Chinese Scholars' Objects in Precious Woods, Chicago, 2015, p.306.

Antique Chinese Cinnabar Lacquer Tray/Stand with Dragon Design, Guangxu Period (1875-1908).
A dark vermillion red carved cinnabar lacquered Scholar’s tray on raised and footed supports. The top and sides of the tray carved in tight geometric diminishing square hatch ground with blossom centers. The aprons carved in deep relief on each side with two opposing auspicious five-clawed dragons chasing the flaming pearl amongst the clouds. The four corners with square curved feet supports. The underside lacquered black and unmarked.
4.75 in. high x 15 in. wide x 12.75 in. deep (12 x 38 x 32.5 cm).
